One of the more important parts of the car is not found under the hood, but rather, right before your very eyes. The windshield is the glass partition that protects the people inside the car from being pelted with outdoor elements, like dust, debris, heat and more, while allowing for a clear vision. Were it to develop a crack, it can seriously impair the vision of the driver, thereby making it dangerous to drive the roads.
Unlike spilled or smeared liquid that can be cleaned with soap and water, cracks tend to be a more permanent type of damage on your car. When this happens, therefore, you should make haste and send it off for a check-up and repair from auto care professionals. Never mind that it’s a small one — cracks do spread, after all, eventually making for a much bigger problem.
How cracks occur
How do cracks appear, though, and what can be done to prevent it from happening? Most commonly, your windshield developing a crack would require an external force, such as bits of rock hurling straight onto your windshield as you drive on rough roads. It may also be caused by someone throwing other objects at you, with clear intent of either hurting you or damaging your property.
There are times, however, when the crack just simply happens. Otherwise known as a stress crack, this occurs when there is a sudden and large shift in the temperature. For example, leaving your car outside under the heat of the sun can develop a crack come nightfall, when the British Columbia temperature is much cooler. It can also develop if, under the same circumstance of being exposed to the heat, you suddenly turn up the AC without gradual adjustment.
What to do about the crack
Once the crack appears, and depending on how large it is, you must immediately seek help from a Kelowna auto glass repair shop, like Enterprise Glass Ltd. You can be sure that it will inevitably spread, especially if there is stress on the ends of the crack. The only way that a crack will not spread is if it is in a dish-shaped form, because then there would be none of the rays—or the webs—that spread out from the core.
For all other kinds of crack, though, even if it is just a tiny chip, you can expect the damage to become worse as the days go by. It may be costly, and you may find it unnecessary, but between having your vision impaired and your safety put at risk versus getting windshield replacement in Kelowna, it’s much better to go for the latter option.
